I completed a booklet, so although I do not have permission to blog about my work experience- I will update this post with the general things I learnt about small animal vet practices! 🙂

“Every day is a new adventure!” • After an evening flight and 5 hours sleep (not good ☹️), I was back to work as a kennel assistant this morning. Fortunately, I was still on a high from my hike up Harder Kulm (🇨🇭⛰) yesterday with @healthcoachmoniquenelson ... and coffee ☕️. • Returning home / to work / to study after a trip does not have to be doom and gloom. For example, this is Maisie, a wonderful study buddy. • I am usually extremely anxious to be constantly productive. For once in my life, no exaggeration, I am not at war with my mind. I have completed a mere 2 hours of studying post-shift, and I am not battling against compulsions to continue throughout the night. I am learning when enough is enough. • Look at Maisie on the photo. Studying requires so much of our energy, maths makes Maisie sleepy 😉. But seriously, we should pride ourselves on the number of hours of sleep we get instead of bragging about all-nighters? “Everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you are climbing it.” • Spent my last day in Switzerland with the wonderful @healthcoachmoniquenelson , hiking up (& down!) Harder Kulm whilst talking about the world. • From mental health to business, I feel so lucky to have connected with such an interesting & talented woman. • We discussed the importance of balance, and the connections of mental/physical/emotional health. We must continue to eat wholesome healthy food to feed our minds, exercise to show gratitude to our strong bodies. • It was a beautiful moment to finally acknowledge that my body is great as it is. It takes me up mountains. It is squidgy and my thighs now touch, but my life is not consumed by weight loss and disordered rituals. • It can be so tough when you have had an eating disorder, some days you still experience the disgust of despising every inch of your body. So be grateful for the things it allows you to do in your life. • I am grateful that I can climb mountains. • Mountain life will recommence in a few months. Now, I am back on a train to the airport. And I said to my body, softly: I want to be your friend”. It took a long breath, and replied: I have been waiting my whole life for this.” • Eat cake. Be happy. • Sitting in the sun, eating the BEST carrot cake. Thriving rather than merely surviving. • Food IS fuel. It is not the enemy. We should obsess over the wonderful things our bodies do for us... hiking up mountains, caring for animals... instead of obsessing over calories and kg. • Freedom feels incredible. Far more incredible that control. What you begin to control ends up controlling your every move, suffocate your every thought. • I love to eat carrot cake wherever I go with @chelseajadeeyre . “Balance is a feeling derived from being whole and complete; it’s a sense of harmony. It is essential to maintaining quality in life and work.” • Uncertainty and spontaneity are outside of my comfort zone. But life begins in that zone. • Doing everything in excess, from studying to exercising. A major flaw disguised as a “perfect life”. • In that head space, you believe that you are being successful. Truthfully, you are being unproductive and wasting valuable time being a broken record. • Life is not about the 12 hours of studying. Nor is it about the 50k steps. Life is about waking up when your body feels refreshed, feeling completely at ease when revising, being present in social situations rather than being caught up in a dark spiral of anxiety and worry. • Obsessions can be an avoidance of discomfort, shutting up the anxiety gremlin screaming in your head that you are lazy and wasting time. • Let’s aim for a happy, balanced life. • This is my journey to balance. • #studying #mentalhealth #recovery #aspiringvet #aspiringveterinarian #switzerland🇨🇭 #switzerland #animals #happiness #wellbeing #goat #therapy #goats #animal #travelling #europe

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” • After some time reflecting, here in the Swiss mountains, I realise how happy I am that I am not taking the “conventional route” to university. • Metaphorically, after a hard hike up a mountain I can appreciate the beauty of the climb. Travelling has put my worries and struggles into perspective. • I promise that no matter how difficult things may be for you now, that you will soon appreciate your challenges. “Travel not to find yourself but to remember who you've been all along.” • After working on a husky farm in Finland, I realised just how my teenage years revolving around mental illness had stripped me of my independence and self-confidence. • Whilst my current stay in Switzerland is short, I’m still learning so much. This time around I am not striving for crazy step counts, how much weight I can lose hiking, but practising simply “being”. Today I sat on the side of a cabin in the mountains, no racing thoughts or anxiety about productivity. My only thoughts were “how lucky am I to be alive.” • I walked through knee high snow on our visit up the mountain, I went on an adventure with the goats to the Ibex park, I sorted through the hay with the current lovely goat-sitter. These memories are far more important than the hours of revision I have also completed. The laughter is more valuable than the steps. • It’s so important to look back at how far you have come.
